Players are still developing basic skating skills
Forward skating is improving; backwards skating ranges from very new to fairly comfortable
Players may still struggle with stopping, turning, crossovers, and full control
Stickhandling, passing, and shooting are still developing and may be inconsistent
Many players are learning positioning, rules, and team concepts
Puck control while skating is still a work in progress
Physical play should be minimal to none (accidental contact may happen)
Overall skill range: 1–4 out of 10

Players are comfortable skating and can keep up with the flow of the game
Most players have solid hockey awareness and understand positioning
Skating, puck handling, passing, and shooting are more consistent
Game pace is faster and players can generally keep up with play
Many players may not have had formal coaching, but are athletic and experienced
Some players may be former higher-level skaters who are slowing down with age, time away from the ice or injury
Overall players are “middle of the pack” recreational hockey skill-wise
Overall skill range: 5–6 out of 10
